Sen. Camera Bartolotta (R-46) announced today that Washington County is set to receive a $9.4 million grant from the Pennsylvania Broadband Development Authority (PBDA) to enhance access to high-speed internet. Bartolotta emphasized the importance of reliable internet access for various sectors of the community, stating, “Reliable, high-speed internet access is critical for people of all ages – students trying to learn and employers trying to operate in a manner customers have come to expect."

The grant, made possible by the federally funded Broadband Infrastructure Program, aims to address the lack of 25/3 Mbps internet service in the state. Bartolotta commended the collaboration between the Washington County Authority, Comcast, and PBDA for making the project a reality, mentioning, “I am so pleased the Washington County Authority, Comcast and PBDA partnered to make it happen."

PBDA's commitment to transparency and efficiency is evident in its requirement for grantees to submit quarterly and annual progress reports, along with adherence to state and federal guidelines. The allocated funds are expected to be fully utilized by December 31, 2026, with grantees being held accountable for the appropriate use of the funds. The PBDA retains the authority to reclaim any unused or misused funds.

The grants awarded in this round mark a significant step in PBDA's mission to bridge the digital divide, following its establishment by the General Assembly in 2021. This initiative underscores the importance of ensuring equitable access to high-speed internet for all residents of Pennsylvania.
