Penn State Health has been recognized for its strong performance in patient safety, with all five of its hospitals receiving high marks in the latest Hospital Safety Grades from the Leapfrog Group. The ratings, released on November 13, 2025, show continued commitment to safety across the health system.
Dr. Michael Kupferman, chief executive officer of Penn State Health, said, “Our commitment to safety is embedded in every aspect of care we provide. These grades reflect the dedication of our entire team to creating a secure, healing environment for every patient, every day.”
For the second consecutive reporting period, Penn State Health Hampden Medical Center, Lancaster Medical Center and Milton S. Hershey Medical Center each earned an ‘A’ grade—the highest rating available from Leapfrog. Holy Spirit and St. Joseph medical centers received ‘B’ grades again, showing consistent performance throughout the organization.
The Leapfrog Group is a national nonprofit organization that reviews nearly 3,000 general acute-care hospitals twice per year. Its evaluations are based on more than 30 publicly available measures related to how well hospitals prevent errors and harm to patients.
Leah Binder, president and chief executive officer of the Leapfrog Group stated: “Achieving an ‘A’ Hospital Safety Grade reflects enormous dedication to patient safety. I extend my congratulations to Penn State Health, its leadership, clinicians, staff and volunteers for creating a culture where patients come first.”
