Penn State Health has officially opened the Penn State Health Cancer Center at Hampden Medical Center, aiming to provide more accessible cancer care for residents of the West Shore. The ceremonial event, held on October 20, brought together officials from Penn State Health, Penn State College of Medicine, Highmark Health, the American Cancer Society, government representatives, and philanthropic supporters. The center will begin accepting patients on October 27.

The new facility is located on the ground floor of Hampden Medical Center and consolidates services previously offered at three separate locations. This move is intended to streamline care and enhance coordination for patients and families.

“Expanding cancer care to the West Shore is an important step in fulfilling our mission to make world-class health care accessible to every community we serve,” said Dr. Michael Kupferman, CEO of Penn State Health. “The Cancer Center at Hampden Medical Center allows our patients to receive comprehensive treatment close to home, while still benefiting from the strength and expertise of the entire Penn State Health system.”

Spanning 40,250 square feet, the center provides a range of services under one roof. Patients can access physician appointments, diagnostic imaging, lab services, infusion treatments, medical oncology, radiation therapy, breast care programs as well as education and support resources. Advanced therapies and clinical trials are also available at this location.

“The new cancer center is not only a clinical resource, but also an extension of our academic mission,” said Dr. Karen Kim, dean of Penn State College of Medicine. “Patients here will benefit from access to innovative therapies emerging from Penn State College of Medicines robust research enterprise, as well as participation in novel clinical trials that are shaping the future of cancer care.”

To further centralize patient care operations:
– Breast Surgery; Physical and Occupational Therapy; Breast Imaging; Radiation Oncology (previously located at Century Drive)
– Medical Oncology (previously at Andrews Patel Camp Hill)

These practices have relocated into the new facility.

The Hampden site joins other Penn State Health cancer centers in Hershey and Reading. All centers use a collaborative approach designed for personalized treatment plans across different types of cancers.

“This center was built around what patients and families told us they wanted most – comfort, continuity and convenience,” said Dr. Marc Rovito, vice president of cancer services for Penn State Health. “By bringing together medical oncology, radiation therapy, surgical services, support programs and clinical research in one place, we are creating a truly patient-centered destination for cancer care on the West Shore.”
