Expectant mothers and families in Lancaster County will soon have access to enhanced care as Penn State Health Lancaster Medical Center plans to expand its Family Birthing Suite. The expansion will include a Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), which is expected to open by fall 2026.
The new NICU aims to provide advanced care for newborns requiring more medical support than a standard nursery can offer. It will be staffed around the clock and integrated with Labor and Delivery, ensuring continuous care from birth.
Joseph Frank, president of Penn State Health’s Lancaster and St. Joseph medical centers, stated, “Lancaster Medical Center’s new Level II NICU will bring expert, trusted care closer to home for patients in Lancaster County and minimize disruptions in neonatal care.” He added that it would facilitate smoother transitions for infants needing advanced treatment at the Level IV NICU at their Children’s Hospital in Hershey.
The High Foundation has pledged the first philanthropic support for this project. Currently, the project is in the design phase. Once completed, it will proceed to bidding before construction begins.
