Senators Dave McCormick (R-PA) and Tim Kaine (D-VA) have introduced new bipartisan legislation aimed at preserving historic battlefields across the United States. The proposed American Battlefield Protection Program Amendments Act of 2025 seeks to enhance federal efforts to protect sites connected to significant wars fought on American soil.
“From the Revolutionary War to the Civil War, Pennsylvania’s battlefields stand as powerful reminders of pivotal moments that shaped our nation’s history and our future,” said Senator Dave McCormick. “By preserving and protecting these sacred battlefields, we honor the contributions of all Americans, educate future generations, and drive increased economic benefits for local communities by attracting visitors eager to learn and explore.”
Senator Kaine emphasized Virginia’s role in military history, stating: “From Yorktown to Appomattox to the Pentagon, the map of Virginia is a map of America’s military history. Especially as we come up on America’s 250th birthday, it’s critical that we ensure our country’s battlefields are preserved, so future generations can visit and learn about their importance. Last year, the President signed my bipartisan bill, the American Battlefield Protection Program Enhancement Act, into law to help us do that. I’m glad to work alongside Senator McCormick to build on that progress by further supporting the program.”
The legislation proposes several changes:
– It would reauthorize the American Battlefield Protection Program through 2035.
– The federal cost-share for nonprofit preservation efforts would increase from 50 percent to 75 percent.
– The National Park Service and Department of the Interior would be directed to study sites related to both the French and Indian War and the Mexican-American War.
– An authorization for $20 million in funding each fiscal year through 2035 is included.
The introduction of this bill comes as preparations continue for America’s upcoming 250th anniversary. Lawmakers hope these measures will help preserve key historical locations for educational purposes and community benefit.
