HARRISBURG — Illegal dumpers throughout Harrisburg have been put on notice, and this summer, the city is getting reinforcements.
Hot Spot Saturdays, an initiative started in 2022 by Councilman Ralph Rodriguez, is making its return to Harrisburg neighborhoods this June. Rodriguez has organized five clean-ups, concentrated around what sanitation experts refer to as “hot spots” for illegal dumping activity:
- June 17, 2023 – Camp Curtin neighborhood, Uptown Harrisburg
- July 22, 2023 – South Side/Clovery Heights
- August 12, 2023 – Allison Hill
- September 16, 2023 – Midtown
- October 7, 2023 – South Side/13th St
“Hot Spot Saturdays” are entirely volunteer driven; community members coming together, Rodriguez said, to make a difference in their neighborhoods one piece of trash at a time. Anyone interested in participating in this year’s five clean-up dates are asked to register through the Hot Spot Saturdays website.
The issue of illegal dumping is one which is prevalent in the City of Harrisburg. In 2022, City Public Works picked up well over 150 piles of illegally dumped bulk trash, costing the city, in full, more than $120,000 in the 2022 fiscal year. In October, the city teamed up with Dauphin County to hire Pete Baltimore as its illegal dumping enforcement officer, and in early 2023, started placing eight surveillence cameras and numerous license plate readers in areas where trash tends to be dumped illegally.
“It starts with you, our residents, to help keep our city clean, because it’s your city first,” said Public Works Director Dave West. “We want to catch the culprits who do not care about our city. We will not tolerate anyone dumping anything in our city like it’s nothing.
“We will get you. We are going to catch you.”
