Language proposed by Representative Sheryl M. Delozier has been unanimously approved by the House as an amendment to Senate Bill 1080. The amendment aims to address a discrepancy at the state level, ensuring that veterans and their spouses receive a waiver for the Vital Statistics fee associated with obtaining death certificates.

“Cumberland County is home to about 17,000 veterans and numerous funeral homes,” Delozier stated. She explained that the need for this legislative change was highlighted by a New Cumberland funeral home in her district when confusion arose following a notice from the Department of Health altering the policy on free death certificates for veterans.

Delozier noted, “Department of Health interpretation of the law made it so spouses of predeceased veterans could not obtain the fee waiver. I believe this interpretation is wrong; and my amendment would ensure the death certificate fee is waived for the spouse of a veteran, regardless of whether the veteran predeceased or survived their spouse.”

She emphasized her belief that families of those who serve deserve respect and benefits such as waived fees for official documentation. “I’m glad this amendment was adopted with unanimous, bipartisan support, and I look forward to seeing Senate Bill 1080 signed into law for our vets and their families,” she concluded.
