Zion Lutheran Church issued the following announcement on Oct. 22.
Runners and walkers of all ages joined Catholic Charities in the 17th annual Shelter Shuffle on October 17 in Harrisburg. The 5K run and walk raises funds for the Interfaith Shelter for Homeless Families, a residential program that keeps homeless families together in times of crisis.
Men, women and children – some pushing strollers or jogging with their dogs – joined in the 5K on the grounds of the former State Hospital to run the expansive course. Taking their marks at the starting line, they were cheered on by honorary race starter Valerie Pritchett, news anchor for ABC 27, and Chris Meehan, Catholic Charities’ Development Director.
The event raised upwards of $2,500 for the Interfaith Shelter, which is located at the St. Samuel Center in Harrisburg. Since opening in 1992, the program has assisted nearly 15,000 individuals with emergency shelter while they search for steady employment and secure housing. Last year, 306 individuals from 108 families found help and hope at the shelter.
At the finish line, winners in the men’s and women’s categories were Jim Lawruk with a time of 18:30 and Julie Halterman with a time of 19:25.
