The Senate Community, Economic and Recreational Development Committee, chaired by State Sen. Chris Gebhard, has approved Senate Bill 1014, a bill aimed at expanding city revitalization efforts in Pennsylvania. The bill, introduced by Sen. Daniel Laughlin, seeks to update the current requirements and expand the eligibility for the City Revitalization and Improvement Zones (CRIZ) Program.
The CRIZ Program, established by Act 52 of 2013, allows state and local taxes collected in the CRIZ to remain in the local community to foster economic development. This program has already shown positive results in cities like Lancaster, Bethlehem, and Tamaqua.
"It only makes sense to build upon the success of programs like this that are working," said Chairman Gebhard. "I commend Sen. Laughlin for his extensive work on this and believe allowing communities to keep more of their own tax dollars is the type of economic development Pennsylvania needs."
The approval of Senate Bill 1014 by the committee marks an important step towards expanding the CRIZ Program and further supporting city revitalization efforts in Pennsylvania. The bill will now move on to the full senate for consideration.
