A bill proposing significant tax cuts in Pennsylvania was approved by the Senate with a 36-14 vote. The bill, Senate Bill 269, seeks to reduce the Personal Income Tax (PIT) rate from 3.07% to 2.8% and eliminate the Gross Receipts Tax on energy starting from Jan. 1, 2025.
Senator Chris Gebhard (R-48) highlighted that this bipartisan legislation represents the largest tax cut for working families in Pennsylvania's history, aiming to leave over $13 billion with Pennsylvania taxpayers over the next five years. Gebhard emphasized the tangible impact these cuts would have on Pennsylvanians, especially amidst the financial challenges posed by inflation.
Gebhard stated, "Pennsylvania families are struggling to keep up with inflation. We see it every day at the grocery store, at the gas pump, and on the electric bill. My bill will make a real tangible difference in the finances of every Pennsylvanian. These cuts will help improve their lives."
The proposed tax cuts are expected to benefit all Pennsylvania families, injecting an additional $3 billion into the state's economy, rather than expanding government programs. This stands in contrast to the calls for increased government spending by Gov. Josh Shapiro and the potential tax hikes on small businesses proposed by House Democrats.
Gebhard expressed gratitude for the opportunity to return $3 billion to the taxpayers of Pennsylvania, emphasizing his continuous efforts since 2021 to prevent unnecessary tax increases and new government spending. The bill has been forwarded to the House of Representatives for further consideration.
