Senator Camera Bartolotta has announced a significant financial commitment to the Mid Mon-Valley Water Pollution Control Authority. The authority is set to receive $4.1 million through a low-interest loan and an additional $400,000 grant. These funds are designated for replacing outdated components of the wastewater system.
The initiative aims to mitigate inflow and infiltration issues while preventing sewer overflows by upgrading three pump stations. Planned improvements include demolishing existing control buildings at these stations and constructing new structures above the wet well that will house a valve room, generator, and control room. Upgrades will also be made to pumps, meters, and valves, with reconstruction planned for one station's wet well.
Bartolotta emphasized the financial relief this funding provides to local families: “Families can’t bear the full cost of the system replacement, so this funding will be instrumental – especially because the families impacted have a household income lower than the state average,” she stated. She further noted that the upgrades would enhance system reliability, reducing potential costs from sewer backups not typically covered by homeowner’s insurance.
Currently servicing 950 residential customers in a population of 2,185, this project is backed by a 20-year loan at an interest rate of 1%. Over its term, it will yield grant-equivalent benefits exceeding $1.4 million.
The Pennsylvania Infrastructure Investment Authority (PENNVEST) approved this funding during its board meeting today. PENNVEST is known for providing financial assistance through loans and grants for projects related to drinking water distribution facilities, stormwater management systems, as well as wastewater treatment and collection systems.
