State Representative Sheryl M. Delozier from Cumberland has expressed her views on Governor Josh Shapiro's budget address for the 2023-24 fiscal year. In a statement, Delozier acknowledged the governor's $45.8 billion plan, highlighting several proposals she supports, such as probation reform and tax credits for essential workers like nurses and teachers.
"Today, Gov. Shapiro presented a $45.8 billion plan for our Commonwealth that deserves careful consideration," Delozier stated. She emphasized her long-standing advocacy for probation reform and praised the addition of four new state trooper classes to support law enforcement.
However, Delozier raised concerns about the proposed increase in spending by 6% compared to the current year. "My main concern with his proposal is the increase in spending from this current year by 6%. This will deplete the Rainy Day Fund in five years and the Commonwealth’s reserves in three years," she warned.
Delozier stressed the importance of evaluating the fiscal viability of these ideas through upcoming Appropriations Committee hearings. She noted shared goals with Governor Shapiro, including funding education and police while providing career opportunities for Pennsylvanians.
"We share many of the same goals," she said, but added that achieving these should not involve adding new government programs or overspending beyond available resources. "I look forward to doing my part to advance responsible solutions and priorities over the next several months."
