Rep. Joe Kerwin of Dauphin County has returned to Pennsylvania following a 10-month military deployment in eastern Africa. During his service, Kerwin led a company of 131 soldiers with Task Force Paxton, 2nd Battalion, 112th Infantry, part of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard. His unit was responsible for securing an expeditionary air base from terrorist threats and ensuring the safety of American assets.
Kerwin expressed gratitude for the safe return of his unit and his brother, Capt. Jack Kerwin. "I am thankful that my unit is out of harm’s way," he stated. He praised the courage and dedication of the soldiers who served alongside him, acknowledging their sacrifices in challenging conditions.
Upon returning home, Kerwin is eager to resume his legislative duties in Dauphin County's 125th Legislative District. "Now that I am home, I am ready to continue my important work on behalf of the 125th Legislative District," he said.
During his deployment, Kerwin received several honors for his leadership and service: the Meritorious Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, and the Air and Space Commendation Medal.
A piece of legislation sponsored by Kerwin was signed into law while he was overseas. Act 36 of 2024 establishes a specialty license plate for veterans who served in Operation Inherent Resolve against ISIS terrorists in Syria, Iraq, and Libya.
House Republican Leader Bryan Cutler welcomed Kerwin's return and acknowledged the support provided by his family during his absence. "When Rep. Kerwin and his Pennsylvania National Guard unit began preparing for deployment nearly a year ago, it was our fervent hope and prayer that they would return safely," Cutler remarked.
Kerwin also expressed appreciation for his staff who managed district operations during his deployment.
